Since one of the hallmarks of Reconstructionist ideology is that Judaism is a civilization, we are aware that our Jewish lives are informed by art, language and culture as well as by religious ideology and religious practice. To ensure that we have meaningful opportunities to engage with art, language and culture, our morning Torah study will consist of reading poetry. We will be looking at Jewish poems, but this begs the question, what is a Jewish poem?
Melissa Schaffer joins Beth Sandweiss and May Benatar to lead our 9:00 AM chanting and meditation sessions for what promises to be an invigorating spiritual workout. This past summer Beth and Melissa studied with renowned spiritual leader, Rabbi Shefa Gold, who is a leader in Aleph: Alliance for Jewish Renewal and received her ordination both from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and from Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. We look forward to hearing about their experiences, learning some new chants and finding new ways to get our spiritual juices flowing.

Mark Levy,
Jewish Folksongs in Yiddish, Hebrew and Ladino
We close out this season with a bang (in three languages!) Courtesy of the Hirschhorn Foundation and the JCC, Mark Levy brings us a delightful evening of Jewish folksongs, the Language of the Soul. Mark delivers a song with such feeling and conviction that audiences around the world are mesmerized. Descended from an Eastern European Ashkenazi mother and a Western European Sephardi father, he combines the beautiful Yiddish and Ladino melodies of both traditions with the newer Hebrew and Israeli songs in a versatile performance that constantly transports the listener to another time and place.
Rabbi Elliott’s Sabbatical starts at the end of this month (although he will be at BK for the High Holidays). During this service, we will be wishing Rabbi Elliott, Sarah, Kiva and Sam a rewarding time while away from BK. They will leave knowing they go with our best wishes and that we will be waiting for their return with open arms. Please come celebrate with this service and festive Oneg Shabbat. Let’s give them a good send off!In this class we'll combine two core Jewish spiritual practices: Torah study and meditation. In each class we'll study texts related to our search for lives of holiness. We'll also practice various techniques of meditation and mindfulness practice intended to help us recognize and experience holiness.
Please join us this week as we celebrate a Bar Mitzvah.
Join BK Reads and travel back to postwar Brooklyn as we discuss Pete Hamill's Snow in August, a New York Time's bestseller. Michael Delvin, an 11-year-old altar boy, befriends Rabbi Judah Hirsch, a Holocaust survivor from Czechoslovakia. The two form a strong bond in which they help and learn from one another, as well as fight anainst neighborhood prejudice.
