Melissa Schaffer joins Beth Sandweiss and May Benatar to lead our 9:00 AM chanting and meditation sessions for what promises to be an invigorating spiritual workout. This past summer Beth and Melissa studied with renowned spiritual leader, Rabbi Shefa Gold, who is a leader in Aleph: Alliance for Jewish Renewal and received her ordination both from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and from Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. We look forward to hearing about their experiences, learning some new chants and finding new ways to get our spiritual juices flowing.

Mark Levy,
Jewish Folksongs in Yiddish, Hebrew and Ladino

We close out this season with a bang (in three languages!) Courtesy of the Hirschhorn Foundation and the JCC, Mark Levy brings us a delightful evening of Jewish folksongs, the Language of the Soul.  Mark delivers a song with such feeling and conviction that audiences around the world are mesmerized. Descended from an Eastern European Ashkenazi mother and a Western European Sephardi father, he combines the beautiful Yiddish and Ladino melodies of both traditions with the newer Hebrew and Israeli songs in a versatile performance that constantly transports the listener to another time and place.

In this class we'll combine two core Jewish spiritual practices: Torah study and meditation. In each class we'll study texts related to our search for lives of holiness. We'll also practice various techniques of meditation and mindfulness practice intended to help us recognize and experience holiness.

Join BK Reads and travel back to postwar Brooklyn as we discuss Pete Hamill's Snow in August, a New York Time's bestseller. Michael Delvin, an 11-year-old altar boy, befriends Rabbi Judah Hirsch, a Holocaust survivor from Czechoslovakia. The two form a strong bond in which they help and learn from one another, as well as fight anainst neighborhood prejudice.
