Throughout the month of Elul, it is our task to be engaged in a process of deep, serious introspection and reflection on who we have been over the past year, and who we want to be over the coming year. As Reconstructionist Jews, our relationship to some elements of the religious services of the High Holy Days themselves may be varied and complicated. For example, how do we reconcile our personal psycho-spiritual journeys with the traditional images of G-d as Judge and King?

In the 19th century, Rabbi Samson Rafael Hirsch categorized the mitzvoth by function: justice towards other people, justice for the environment, love and concern for other people, enrichment of the environment, and the inner life. Using an English text by Rabbi Aryeh Carmel, a 20th century scholar of Mussar (a Jewish Spiritual practice to be discussed further in class), we will explore these categories throughout the year.
