Hay

HEBREW/PRAYERS

Hay students further their reading, writing, and modern Hebrew skills (including present tense verbs and simple sentence structures).  They learn the blessings of the Amidah and explore their meanings through art and drama.

HOLIDAYS/HISTORY

Hay students study the holidays through the lens of freedom.  Their year is grounded around our sacred myth of liberation coupled with the modern miracle of the state of Israel.  The practices of the state of Israel and Jewish communities around the world feature heavily in their holiday observances.

BIBLE

Hay students wrap up the Prophets and explore the major books of Writings, with particular attention to books associated with holidays.

VALUES

The theme for the Hay year is Tziyonut/Klal Yisraeli (Zionism and Jewish peoplehood).  They explore Israel as a land, a state, and a people.  The relationship between Israel and the Diaspora is a major focus.  The cultures of Jewish communities around the world are of particular interest.  This theme is also explored in family education.

OTHER

Gimmel, Dalet, and Hay participate in a variety of hands-on tzedakah projects through the year, chosen by the classes.  They also participate in multi-age hands on holiday programming (olive oil press, matzah factory) and collaborate art work through the year.  Each class has an opportunity during the year to participate in cooking activities.  These classes are also particularly invited to participate in BK Youth Choir when opportunities for performance arise.
