Congregation-based community organizing (CBCO)

Congregation Based Community Organizing (CBCO) has become a way for many houses of worship—Jewish and non-Jewish—to engage in social justice work. Since 2005, Bnai Keshet has been exploring CBCO as a way to extend our long-standing involvement in social action and build effective working relationships with other like-minded congregations. The starting point for CBCO is relationship-building both within the congregation and with other congregations in our community. Relationship-building has taken the form of house meetings (small-group discussions about the issues that have the greatest impact on people’s daily lives) and one-on-ones (two-person conversations with a focus on the participants’ passions and concerns). We have also begun to establish ties with other houses of worship in Montclair to develop a cluster of congregations that can work together on problems common to the community at large, such as the lack of affordable housing and health care. Our efforts have been featured in K’hilot K’doshot: Holy Congregations, Just Communities, a 2007 publication of the Jewish Funds for Justice that highlights the social justice achievements of several congregations.
